First Philadelphia selected 160 students for assessment. Let’s Go Learn’s Diagnostic Online Reading Assessment (DORA) and the Adaptive Diagnostic Assessment of Mathematics (ADAM) web-based assessments were used for the assessment. Data from the assessments was compiled and presented to the school for review. First Philadelphia selected middle school students for training in math who were at least 2 ½ years below their current grade level. Middle school students who were below their current grade level in reading were candidates for the training program in reading.High school students who were 3 ½ years or more below in grade level in reading and 4 ½ years or more below grade level in math were candidates for the training programs. A total of fifty middle and high school students were selected for the remedial math and reading program.
The Academy of Reading offering instruction in Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary & Comprehension and The Academy of Math, offering instruction in Numbers and Operations in Base 10, Numbers and Operations in Fractions, Measurement and Data, Geometry and Operations in Algebraic Thinking were used to provide individualized training for students in the specific area where deficiencies had been identified.
