Since 1999, Freire Charter School has been a catalyst for unlocking the potential of some of Philadelphia’s most underserved youth. Where many other schools have failed, Freire Charter School has achieved excellence for children through a rigorous college preparatory program and a commitment to peace and nonviolence in the community – both within their walls and beyond. WSG was selected to implement a program called, DEEP REMEDIATION at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year.
Over 150 students were assessed using Let’s Go Learn’s Diagnostic Online Reading Assessment (DORA) and the Adaptive Diagnostic Assessment of Mathematics (ADAM) web-based assessments. Data from the assessments was compiled and presented to the school for review. Fifty students, whose grade level equivalency scores in the reading and math assessments were at least 2 years below their current grade level were selected for participation in the training program. The Academy of Reading offering instruction in Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary & Comprehension and The Academy of Math, offering instruction in Numbers and Operations in Base 10, Numbers and Operations in Fractions, Measurement and Data, Geometry and Operations in Algebraic Thinking were used to provide individualized training for students in the specific area where deficiencies had been identified. Students were reassessed every quarter using the DORA and ADAM assessments.
